1.
She's happy - with a new Content - That feels to her - like Sacrament - She's busy - with an altered Care - As just apprenticed to the Air - She's tearful - if she weep at all - For blissful Causes - Most of all That Heaven permit so meek as her - To such a Fate - to minister -
2.
Mine - by the Right of the White Election! Mine - by the Royal Seal! Mine - by the sign in the Scarlet prison - Bars - cannot conceal! Mine - here - in Vision - and in Veto! Mine - by the Grave's Repeal - Titled - Confirmed - Delirious Charter! Mine - long as Ages steal!
3.
Sweet Mountains - Ye tell Me no lie - Never deny Me - Never fly - Those same unvarying Eyes Turn on Me - When I fail - or feign, Or take the Royal names in vain - Their far - show - Violet Gaze - My Strong Madonnas - Cherish still - The Wayward Nun - beneath the Hill - Whose service - is to You - Her latest Worship - When the Day Fades from the Firmament away - To lift Her Brows on You -
4.
I dwell in Possibility - A fairer House that Prose - More numerous of Windows - Superior - for Doors - Of Chambers as the Cedars - Impregnable of eye - And for an everlasting Roof The Gambrels of the Sky - Of Visitors - the fairest - For Occupation - This - The spreading wide my narrow Hands To gather Paradise -
5.
Wild Nights 03:37
Wild night - Wild nights! Were I with thee Wild night should be Our luxury! Futile - the winds - To a Heart in port - Done with the Compass - Done with the Chart! Rowing in Eden - Ah - the Sea! Might I but moor - tonight - In thee!
6.
I had not minded - Walls - Were Universe - one Rock - And far I heard his silver Call The other side the Block - I'd tunnel - till my Groove Pushed sudden thro' to his - The my face take her Recompense - The looking in his Eyes - But 'tis a single Hair - A filament - a law - A Cobweb - wove in Adamant - A Battlement - of Straw - A limit like a Vail Unto the Lady's face - But every Mesh - a Citadel - And Dragons - in the Crease -
7.
The Zeroes 02:16
The Zeroes taught Us - Phosphorus - We learned to like the Fire By playing Glaciers - when a Boy - And Tinder - guessed - by power Of Opposite - to balance Odd - if White a Red - must be Paralysis - our Primer dumb Unto Vitality -
8.
After great pain, a formal feeling comes - The Nerves sit ceremonious, like Tombs - The stiff Heart questions 'was it He, that bore,' And 'Yesterday, or Centuries before'? The Feet, mechanical, go round - A Wooden way Of Ground, or Air, or Ought - Regardless grown, A Quartz contentment, like a stone - This is the Hour of Lead - Remembered, if outlived, As Freezing persons, recollect the Snow - First - Chill - then Stupor - then the letting go -
9.
It would never be Common - more - I said - Difference - had begun - Many a bitterness - had been - But that old sort - was done - Or - if it sometime - showed - as 'twill - Opon the Downiest - morn - Such bliss - had I - for all the years - 'Twould give an easier - pain - I'd so much joy - I told it - Red - Opon my simple Cheek - I felt it publish - in my eye - 'Twas needless - any speak I walked - as wings - my body bore - The feet - I former used - Unnescessary - now to me - As boots - would be - to Birds - I put my pleasure all abroad - I dealt a word of Gold To every Creature - that I met - And Dowered - all the World - When - suddenly - my Riches shrank - A Goblin - drank my Dew - My Palaces - dropped tenantless - Myself - was beggared - too - I clutched at sounds - I groped at shapes - I touched the tops of Films I felt the Wilderness roll back Along my Golden lines - The Sackcloth - hangs opon the nail - The Frock I used to wear - But where my moment of Brocade - My - drop - of India?
10.
Behind Me - dips Eternity - Before Me - Immortality - Myself - the Term between - Death but the Drift of Eastern Gray, Dissolving into Dawn away, Before the West begin - 'Tis Kingdoms - afterward - the y say - In perfect - pauseless Monarchy - Whose Prince - is Son of none - Himself - His Dateless Dynasty - Himself - Himself diversify - In Duplicate divine - 'Tis Miracle before Me - then - 'Tis Miracle behind - between - A Crescent in the Sea - With Midnight to the North of Her - And Midnight to the South of Her - And Maelstrom - in the Sky -
11.
My Life had stood - a Loaded Gun - In Corners - till a Day The Owner passed - identified - And carried Me away - And now We roam in Sovreign Woods - And now We hunt the Doe - And every time I speak for Him The Mountains straight reply - And do I smile, such cordial light Opon the Vallley glow - It is as a Vesuvian face Had let it's pleasure through - And when at Night - Our good day done - I guard My Master's Head - 'Tis better than the Eider Duck's Deep Pillow - to have shared - To foe of His - I'm deadly foe - None stir the second time - On whom I lay a Yellow Eye - Or an emphatic Thumb - Though I than He - may longer live He longer must - than I - For I have but the power to kill, Without - the power to die -
12.
A still - Volcano - Life - That flickered in the night - When it was dark enough to do Without erasing sight - A quiet - Earthquake style - Too subtle to suspect By natures this side Naples - The North cannot detect The solemn - Torrid - Symbol - The lips that never lie - Whose hissing Corals part - and shut - And Cities - ooze away -
13.
Some - Work for Immortality - The Chiefer part, for Time - He - Compensates - immediately - The former - Checks - on Fame - Slow Gold - but Everlasting - The Bullion of Today - Contrasted with the Currency Of Immortality A Beggar - Here and There - Is gifted to discern Beyond the Broker's insight - One's - Money - One's - the Mine -
14.
Because I could not stop for Death - He kindly stopped for me - The Carriage held but just Ourselves - And Immortality, We slowly drove - He knew no haste And I had put away My labor and my leisure too, For His Civility - We passed the School, where Children strove At Recess - in the Ring - We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain - We passed the Setting sun - Or rather - He passed Us - The Dews drew quivering and Chill For only Gossamer, my Gown - My Tippet - only Tulle - We paused before a House that seemed A swelling in the Ground - The Roof was scarcely visible - The Cornice - in the Ground - Since then - 'tis Centuries - an yet Feels shorter than the Day I first surmised the Horses' Heads Were towards Eternity -

about

This work began in 2015 with a dive into Emily Dickinson's poetry written in the year 1862 and expanded into group and solo performances of her verse. The Devotional Song Album represents a 4 year walk with Dickinson from 1861-1865. These songs are a formation of many voices and I especially thank Joseph Imhauser for weaving many of them with me, also Danny Crump, Johnny Keats, and Suiyen Joa.

about

Emily Melander New York, New York

I sing in the spaces between getting to places curious how one note becomes the next, if it slides, grips, reaches upper registers or depths... I too, am carried with it. Music, for me, is as close as I can get to where we go and come from: the mystery, the instant, the seen, the unseen, the living, and the dead. ... more
